The Annual Show of the Yorkshire Canary Club of Greece was staged on 30th of November in Athens . For second year, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Hall hosted the Greek show in an amazing location.The big difference of this Show Hall is that it is "almost" open to the public. A lot of people,mostly teenagers, visited the Show after the judgment. For one more time,this fact impressed the judge. Normally,the Shows are hosted in places away from strangers,in closed Halls.
The Belgian yorkshire breeder and judge Phillippe Bonjean accepted our invitation and join us during a sunny long weekend! The COM Judge Jaques Princen, a great supporter of our Club, honored us with his visit.
A record entry in recent times of 280 excellent birds were benched on Saturday morning while the exhibitors were "judging" the stock before the judge. The quality of the birds this year was great,it seems that Greeks are improved year after year. The best proof of this is that the Best 7 birds were coming from 5 breeders.
The champion bird was bred and banded by Dimitris Sigalas, it was the first appearence of Dimitris in our Club and he did !!! A green marked buff cock with fantastic round top and excellent position won our Show!
The second Best yorkshire was another great bird of Dimitris Sigalas, a green marked yellow cock of excellent position. An experienced breeder that join our club this year and it was a successful first time! In third place came another green marked yellow cock shown by the PanTheon Partnership of Theotokis Kouratos and Panagiotis Panos. Fourth place for Kostas Kovaios with a clear buff hen while the usual supect George Laskidis was the fifth with a green marked buff hen. Sixth place for PanTheon Partnership with a green marked yellow hen and Vasilis Doukas was the seventh Best in a very strong and competative show
Unfortunately,the curse of the hobby visited our show, there wasn't breeders in Novice Section.A big problem in our hobby is the lack of "fresh blood". We must attract new and young breeders and the location of the Hall is a good start....but seems it is not enough.
The judge Mr Bonjean and our guest Mr Princen commented on the quality of the birds and the passion of the exhibitors. Under the stewardship of Doukas & Kouratos the show was a great success.
The committee (Michaloudis,Laskidis,Panos) had a great help from the exhibitors and our guests left our Hall with lifetime memories.
For one more time Gianellis brothers fed us with their handmade traditional spinach pie, another good reason to visit our Show! The two brothers are a very strong team from Lamia region with great birds and amazing hospitality. Nick Drouzas restarted the yorkie breeding while the Border canary breeder Strouboulis join the yorkie family!
A sincere word of thanks to all that came,travel and show their birds. It was the best show...till next year.
